Kaiser Permanente is again leading the way when it comes to providing high-quality health care.
California’s Office of the Patient Advocate and Covered California gave Kaiser Permanente’s Northern and Southern California commercial health plans the highest possible rating of 5 stars for overall quality of medical care.
According to OPA’s 2022-23 Health Care Quality Report Card for commercial plans, Kaiser Permanente’s Northern and Southern California health plans are the only 2 in the state to receive a 5-star rating for overall quality of medical care. Kaiser Permanente is the only health plan to obtain OPA’s highest rating for overall quality of medical care for 15 consecutive years.
OPA also rates health plans for several areas of specialty care. Kaiser Permanente in Northern California and Kaiser Permanente in Southern California both received 5 stars for behavioral and mental health care. No other plan rated higher than 3 stars. OPA also gave Kaiser Permanente its top rating for heart care, maternity care, preventive screenings, and diabetes care.
OPA’s report card provides California consumers with side-by-side commercial plan comparisons of the 16 largest health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations in the state. An HMO allows patients access to physicians from a particular group of physicians called a network. A PPO permits patients to choose any physician they wish, either inside or outside of their network.
The results from OPA echo the recent Covered California ratings, which recognize Kaiser Permanente as the only health plan in the state to receive a 5-star “Summary Quality Rating” for overall quality. Kaiser Permanente has received a 5-star “Summary Quality Rating” for overall quality in each of the last 4 years.
Covered California — the state’s health insurance marketplace established under the Affordable Care Act — also gave Kaiser Permanente 5 stars for “Getting the Right Care,” a measure that compares Kaiser Permanente with the national standards for providing care and treatments proven to help patients.
“These recognitions demonstrate the high-quality care we provide our members, patients, and the communities we serve across the state of California,” said Janet Liang, executive vice president, group president and chief operating officer, Care Delivery. “We are proud of our Kaiser Permanente care teams and physicians who deliver excellence across specialty care areas, including the mental, physical, and emotional health care our patients deserve every day.”
