HONOLULU — Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center has received the LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Leader designation from The Human Rights Campaign Foundation in its 2022 Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). HEI is the country’s foremost benchmarking survey of health care facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of their LGBTQ+ patients, visitors, and employees.

Members of the LGBTQ+ community frequently experience discrimination in health care facilities resulting in delays, avoidance, or denial of care. The HEI aims to ensure LGBTQ+ people are protected and affirmed by their health care providers and feel safe seeking services. It evaluates and scores health care facilities on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars: foundational policies and training, LGBTQ+ patient services and support, employee benefits and policies, and patient and community engagement.

Moanalua Medical Center, along with all other Kaiser Permanente hospitals, received the maximum score in each section of the HEI survey and earned an overall score of 100. Each participating Kaiser Permanente hospital completed over 16,299 hours of LGBTQ+ training and demonstrated outstanding commitment to providing welcoming and inclusive care, community engagement, and equitable employment practices. Over 900 health care facilities participated in the 2022 HEI survey.
